HOOS Got Your Back!

HOOS Got Your Back: A Bystander Awareness Campaign to End Sexual Violence - WINNER of the Central Virginia American Marketing Association 2015 EMMA Award for Best Cross Media Marketing Campaign.

The University of Virginia launched a multi-media campaign in the Summer of 2014 to educate students about sexual assault and bystander awareness. Stakeholders in the campaign include students, faculty, administrators, campus police and local merchants. The creative plan developed in collaboration between the stakeholders and Paladin Media Group was built around a Bystander Awareness Campaign with the tagline #HOOS GOT YOUR BACK.

A video, which premiered in the John Paul Jones arena for the freshman class and posted online, was chosen to anchor the HOOS Got Your Back campaign. Video is best because it captures emotion and visually highlights the individuals and groups that support the effort. Shirts and laptop stickers were designed, as these items are popular among students. Coasters were chosen to highlight the presence of the campaign in popular bars and restaurants. Merchant decals were created for display in store windows, are printed in school colors (orange and navy blue) to connect the Corner businesses and the campaign to the University. This enables passing students, parents, and visitors to be exposed to the campaign and to see that it extends to local businesses. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts were established around #HOOSGotYourBack. Hashtag on social media to discuss bystander intervention, sexual violence, and to share the video, with hundreds of tweets, retweets, mentions on Facebook.

The campaign was highly successful in getting the word out about HOOS Got Your Back, with over 3,000 views on YouTube and other views from those embedded on websites. The Not on Our Grounds website has received over 4,000 visits and almost 8,000 page views to date. Almost 2,000 shirts were distributed and continue to be seen around the campus. Staff received many requests for T-shirts, as they ran out within a few days. As of late December, entire units and offices were requesting and ordering additional shirts to distribute to their faculty and staff. Merchant employees continue to wear their T-shirts and to express their desire to participate in the campaign in the upcoming academic year.

Of the 5,000 laptop stickers ordered, over 3,000 have been distributed to students and continue to be seen around the campus. Over 1,500 coasters were used at participating restaurants and bars during Homecomings Weekend

Other University groups are using the HOOS Got Your Back campaign in conjunction with their own initiatives, such as the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT), a group of student peer-educators.

Anecdotally, the campaign has led to an increased awareness around bystander intervention, determined in part by the use of #HOOSGotYourBack and as reported by the Program Coordinator at the University. Students are now familiar with common terms and continue to discuss the Red Zone and bystander intervention in conversations around sexual violence.

The EMMA judges commended the #HOOS Got Your Back campaign for its creative use of digital and physical media that resonated with the target audience, as reflected in the results.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – February 2, 2011 - Filmmaker and President of Paladin Pictures, Inc., Kent C. Williamson, recently launched a tribe-funding opportunity to help raise needed production funds for the lacrosse film UN1TY. “We have traditional investors on this project, but we wanted to reach out to the community around us to help make this lacrosse film,” Williamson said. “By bringing people together to help fund the project through KickStarter, we not only get access to the production money we need, but people get excited about the project in the process.”

The screenplay for UN1TY  has been described as The Blind Side meets Facing The Giants on the Lacrosse Field. Williamson hopes to have complete funding in place including both the crowd-sourcing funds and traditional investments   by May. If so, production on the film could begin as early as this summer.

Williamson and his team are trying to raise the additional $70,000 for production of the film via the UN1TY KickStarter project. Tribe-funding or crowdsourcing of artistic projects is built around giving incentives to those who help launch the project and the film UN1TY is no different. Incentives include getting your name in the film’s credits, pre-release copies of the film, digital download packages, autographed screenplays, spending a day on the set, shaving the director’s head, and many more. UN1TY Co-Producer Leslie Wood helped choose the crowd-sourcing website Kickstarter.com to host the project. “What I like about KickStarter is that it’s all or nothing. We raise the complete seventy thousand or we don’t get a dime. That really protects the people that are trying to help us. They know that their credit cards will not be charged if we don’t reach our goal,” Wood added. The minimum pledge on the UN1TY Kickstarter page is $1. A low enough entry point that nearly anyone can help make this film a reality.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - May 21, 2010 - Fellowship of Christian Athletes has endorsed the soon to be produced lacrosse film, UN1TY. Charlottesville-based Paladin Pictures has received the formal endorsement from National Director of FCA Lacrosse, Ryan Horanburg. “When I first heard the title of this new movie...and read the screenplay I couldn’t help but smile,” said Hornaburg. Kent C. Williamson, President of Paladin Pictures stated, “I am thrilled about the relationship between FCA and UN1TY. The collaboration will help give the film visibility across the country and will help us reach our target audience.”

UN1TY is set to become the world’s first faith-based motion picture set in the fast-paced world of lacrosse. Paladin intends to shoot the majority of the film in the Charlottesville, Virginia area. Financing for the picture is still being secured and Paladin has partnered with the non-profit organization, Community Films Foundation to help fund the project.

Established in 1954, The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has become the largest Christian sports organization in America. This non-profit, interdenominational ministry in the last year has reached more than 350,000 people on over 7,100 campuses and has worked with more than 46,000 coaches and athletes at camps across the globe.

PALADIN MEDIA GROUP TO PROVIDE UNPRECEDENTED ONLINE COVERAGE OF ACC SPORTING EVENTS

Exclusive online video streams provide ACC fans across the country a new way to see their sport

Charlottesville, Virginia – Paladin Media Group has announced that it will provide the production services for exclusive coverage of ACC sporting events not available on broadcast or cable television. Teaming with Turner Broadcasting’s ACC Select to cover competition at the University of Virginia, this marks the first time in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history that online video streams of regular season games are being made available to a national fan base.

Paladin Sports has already begun coverage of forty-plus NCAA events, including women’s and men’s lacrosse, tennis, basketball, softball and baseball, among others. The wide range of contests delivers an unprecedented opportunity for fans to watch live and on-demand coverage of college athletics rarely available on television. ACC Select utilizes the production and technical capabilities of Paladin Media Group and Turner Broadcasting, which also provides streaming video platforms for many properties, including CNN.com, NASCAR.COM and PGA.com. ACC Select games will be available exclusively at www.accselect.com.

Launched in September 2006 through a partnership with Raycom Sports, Lincoln Financial Sports and the ACC, ACC Select provides fans with the best seat in the house for the conference’s Olympic-type sports. The site includes a large portfolio of match-ups across 20 different sports for all 12 ACC schools. “From baseball and basketball, to lacrosse and tennis, ACC Select is the best place for alumni, parents and fans everywhere to watch ACC sports and match-ups that they can’t see anywhere else,” said Phil Sharpe, Senior Vice President of technical operations and development for Turner Sports.

The ACC and UVA are nationally recognized for strength in athletics, both men’s and women’s, providing just the kind of events a national audience wants to see. Live and on-demand streams on the web are a groundbreaking way to get them there. “The [program] continues to reach new milestones and we are extremely excited to be out in the forefront of this technology,” said ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford.

Paladin, too, is excited to be such an important part of this forward-looking venture. Paladin Sports is responsible for the production of the remainder of the ACC Select events at UVA this season and is looking forward to expanding their partnership with Turner Sports. “We’re thrilled to be providing this opportunity for UVA students, alumni, recruits, parents and athletes,” says Josh McGonigle, Paladin’s Coordinating Producer for Turner ACC Select, “and we’re anxious to extend our coverage to more sports, like football, more schools and more conferences in the seasons to come.”

PALADIN PICTURES FILM AWARDED DOVE FOUNDATION SEAL OF APPROVAL

Charlottesville, Virginia – January 31, 2006 – The Paladin Pictures film When Love Walks In has received The Dove Foundation’s Certificate of Recognition, officially declaring the film appropriate for family audiences.  This most recent honor for When Love Walks In is added to a growing list of accolades including Best Dramatic Feature, Best Clean Flick, Best Actress, Director’s Award, Best Soundtrack, Best Marketing, and a 2005 Telly Award.

The Dove Foundation is a non-profit organization established to encourage and promote the creation, production, and distribution of wholesome family entertainment.  Free from commercial pressure, the Foundation seeks out films and videos that meet traditional family values and principals of behavior. In October of last year the organization partnered with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to make movie selections easier for consumers searching for family-friendly DVD options such as When Love Walks In.

“Grief is always a difficult subject to deal with, but this movie does an excellent job,” comments Dove Foundation film critic Donna Rolfe in reference to When Love Walks In. “Even though this is a serious topic, this film gives you a few laughs as Art tries to set things in motion for John to find a new mother for Sierra. This movie has many emotions such as sadness, comedy, joy, and love all wrapped into one. Watching this may give you thoughts about changes in your life.”

To bring films such as When Love Walks In to an eager audience, The Dove Foundation has also begun The Dove Movie Channel, a natural extension that provides films and videos especially selected for hospitalized children. These films are shown on the patients' television sets over a designated channel and each participating hospital receives a catalog of over 100 movie titles from which to choose.

When Love Walks In was written and produced by Kent C. Williamson and Directed by Brad Williamson--known together as The Brothers Williamson. In addition to promoting When Love Walks In, the duo is also currently in production on a thought-provoking documentary called Rebellion of Thought that explores faith in a post-modern world. Brad has lived in Sawyer, Michigan with his wife and four kids for nearly 15 years, while Kent resides in Charlottesville, Virginia with his bride and five.

Paladin Pictures Acquires Largest Charlottesville Production Company

Charlottesville, Virginia – November 28, 2005 – After nearly six months of negotiations, Paladin Pictures President Kent C. Williamson has announced the acquisition of Charlottesville-based ESI Productions.  Having acquired the city’s largest television and video production company, Williamson notes Paladin Pictures’ continued growth toward becoming the finest media service provider in the state.

“We see this as a great step because it affords us the opportunity to serve the needs of the Charlottesville community and beyond,” Williamson explains. “We have a long-range vision to keep pace with the changing production needs of this sophisticated market.”  The acquisition of ESI will give Paladin Pictures a sizable market share increase in the local and regional media industry.  In addition to more equipment and an enlarged customer base, Paladin will also benefit from the control of a 35’ x 35’ sound stage, which Williamson hopes to utilize for more local production of high-quality television programming.  “I feel that Paladin has assembled an incredibly strong team--from producers to directors to technicians and editorial staff,” Williamson states.  “It’s the talent of the people and quality of their character that make the company.”  Included in that team is ESI’s founder Rick Import, who will continue to contribute to the operation as a consulting producer.
